How are we doing this?

About a year ago, a friend turned us on to a new program called "Work Away." The concept works like this: hosts around the world who need some help (be it around the hluse, on a farm, or with a small business) post requests for workers. Travelers interested in seeing a certain part of the world can then browse profiles for a good fit, to find a job in the area which may suit their skills. In exchange for ~20 hours of work per week, the host provides meals (or groceries) and a place to sleep. It's a great way to experience another culture without breaking your bank account.

Once we settled on our Work Away stops -- Ireland, Italy, and Bulgaria -- we started filling in our route with other must-sees aling the way. We ordered Eurail passes in advance, which are allowing us to travel across Europe for 2 months (10 travel days within that time frame.) Lodging during this time has consisted of mostly hostels and generous offers from friends.

Globe-trotting on a budget does take a bit of planning, but there are always ways of making it work for you. Happy travels!
